Here at Alastair Arnold Restorer, based in Dorset, we specialise in the restoration and repair of antiques.

We are highly experienced in antique care, and undertake gilding of objects d’art, alongside clock repair and restoration, and antique repair of wrought iron furniture and treen.

We have been in restoration and gilding for over 50 years on many objects d’art. Gilding is the process of applying a thin layer of real or imitation gold to a surface. Gilding is employed on wood, metal, ivory, leather, paper, glass, porcelain and fabric.

Restoration: To bring back to former condition, to reconstruct, to renovate, repair, make good dilapidation and decay (from the Latin ‘restorare’, to repair, rebuild or renew). Antique restoration is easily done badly, and this is all too often the case, each antique object makes its own demands, even though there is almost always more than one approach to the antique care problem.

Too often, broken parts are replaced when they should be repaired, or conversely, repaired when they should be replaced. These are judgements we can make from 50 years of experience, gained from working for museums, top London auction houses, antique dealers, and private individuals throughout Dorset.
